What’s Next? The Golden Hairpin

A Chinese drama that has been creating a lot of buzz since it started filming, The Golden Hairpin stars Kris Wu in his debut as a drama actor and Yang Zi (Ashes of Love) . The Golden Hairpin has an intriguing concept of a young girl going undercover to solve crimes in a historical drama. This Tencent/Hunan TV drama should be up on youtube and I’m sure it’ll be English subbed.

Synopsis: At thirteen, investigative prodigy Huang Zixia had already proved herself by aiding her father in solving confounding crimes. At seventeen, she’s on the run, accused of murdering her family to escape an arranged marriage. Driven by a single-minded pursuit, she must use her skills to unmask the real killer…and clear her name. But when Huang Zixia seeks the help of Li Shubai, the Prince of Kui, her life and freedom are bargained: agree to go undercover as his eunuch to stop a serial killer and to undo a curse that threatens to destroy the Prince’s life. Huang Zixia’s skills are soon tested when Li Shubai’s betrothed vanishes. With a distinctively exquisite golden hairpin as her only clue, Huang Zixia investigates—and discovers that she isn’t the only one in the guarded kingdom with a dangerous secret.

Director Lin Yu Fen (Eternal Love (2017), Lost Love in Times) is at the helm of this drama. The screenwriter is Wong Lei Chi who also wrote 2011’s blockbuster Scarlet Heart (and its sequel 😎) so this cdrama has a great team and I’m hopeful it can live up to its hype.

What’s Next? Xifei’s Royal Love in the Palace

Anyone remember Peter Ho of Summer’s Desire (2010)? Or from Le Jun Kai (2013)? While he is now a director and screenwriter, he still acts occasionally and will be the main lead in Chinese drama Xifei’s Royal Love in the Palace (2020). This drama also stars He Hong Shan in a marriage of convenience story that sounds promising. As this a Tencent drama, it should be up on youtube and I’m sure it’ll be English subbed.

Synopsis: Qing Lian is content to lead an ordinary life and aspires for a suitor who only has eyes for her, yet is instead forced to marry into the royal family. She discovers her husband He Lian Xin is not the heartless and stone-faced noble he presents himself to be, and secretly helps him navigate the treacherous waters, earning his affection and respect in the process. ~~ Based on Legend of Consort Xi by Jieyu.

Xifei’s Royal Love in the Palace (2020) was adopted from a novel and the synopsis reminds me of other cdramas such as The Story of Ming Lan (2018), where the wife supports her husband behind the scenes. I’m not familiar with the female lead He Hong Shan who seems to have played mostly supporting roles in a lot of dramas such as Ruyi’s Royal Love in the Palace, but she was also the main lead in 2019’s Legend of the Phoenix.

The director is Lin Yu Fen, who was also the director of the massively popular Eternal Love (2017), not to mention my personal favorite Lost Love in Times (2017) so this is in very capable hands.

What’s Next? The Lion’s Secret

A Chinese drama I’ve been waiting for, The Lion’s Secret (2020) stars Zhu Ya Wen (Across the Ocean to See You) as a former soldier and Yang Zi Shan (Never Gone) as a female CEO who enter into a contract marriage together. Billed as an action drama, expect to see plenty of action and romance and this iQiyi production should have English subs.

Synopsis: The story of the lion and the lazy cat follows two people who get married first before falling in love. Mu WanQing is a successful lady CEO and Liu Qing is an unemployed former soldier.

Mu WanQing (Yang ZiShan) and Liu Qing’s (Zhu YaWen) first encounter was on their wedding day. With no feelings for each other, their relationship started out hostile until it turns into one of mutual love and support. Liu Qing helps Mu WanQing resolve the crises in her company while at the same time averting the provocations from her ex-boyfriend.

As their love is severely tested, a bigger challenge rises to the surface. In order to fulfill the wishes of their elders, they start on journey to Thailand. (Source: ChineseDrama.info)

What’s Next? She Is The One (2021)

So this Chinese drama has a lot going on, hidden identities, fake brides, etc., but I like the cast. She Is The One (2021) stars Tim Pei (Miss Truth) as the groom and Li Nuo (Su Yu (2020)) as the fake bride. The screenwriter is Chuan Tian (Your Highness (2017)) and Chen Shi Yi directed 2020’s Love in Time, which Li Nuo had a supporting role in. The drama already started airing April 19, 2021 and will air 3 days a week. This is a Youku production, should have 24 episodes, and you can find episodes already English subbed on youtube.

Thursday’s Teaser: Rikokatsu (2021)

This upcoming marriage Japanese dorama called Rikokatsu (2021) gained my attention because of the older than usual cast in these marriage dramas. Nagayama Eita, who starred in another troubled marriage drama Saikou no Rikon, plays the hubby and Kitagawa Keiko (Tantei no Tantei ) is his not so adoring wife. Both actors are well known, and I’ve watched them both and look forward to watching them again in this dorama. It starts airing April 16, 2021 on TBS, and a subbing group will English sub it.

What’s Next? Sapai Jao Sua (2021)

Sapai Jao Sua (2021) is a remake of a 2010 lakorn of the same name. It features my favorite trope, marriage of convenience, so of course I’m interested! This is going to be on Channel 3 and stars Ohm Kanin, Prim Prima (Mia Archeep) and Prim Prima (Sai Tarn Hua Jai). This will be released on April 7 2021, airing five days a week on Channel 3, and at least this lakorn is on Neko’s English subbing list so it should be English subbed.

Synopsis: Tien, a Chinese-Thai business tycoon and his wife, Liu had four sons – Traipob, Traitep, Traipoom , and Traiwit. Tien had planned his sons’ lives from what they should study to whom they should be married to without caring about their willingness. Traitep got married with Ruengrin and Traipoom got married with Wallapa, while Traipob who was very religious, chose to stay single.

All of Tein’s three sons helped Tien in his textile business but Traiwit, the youngest son, didn’t want to be like his older brothers. He decided to become a policeman, and left his home to move to the North-Eastern part of Thailand. There, he met Fahsai, the country girl who was a developer of her hometown. Traiwit didn’t reveal his identity at first, so Fahsai thought Traiwit was trying to trick people in her hometown and didn’t like him.

Traiwit was transferred back to Bangkok, so he hired Fahsai to marry him and to help him fight against his father. He brought her back home to try to make his dad accept what he wanted to be. Tien couldn’t accept Fahsai and tried every way to get her out of the house with the help of Ruengrin and Orn-nisha, the girl that Tien wanted to match up with Traiwit. Fahsai had to strive to win Tien’s heart, while she and Traiwit started to have real feelings for each other. (Source: MyDramaList)

Sapai Jao Sua (2020) has a little twist, a disapproving father instead of a villainous mom. Honestly, how many dramas are there with this trope? I oughta make a list about it. The Chinese Tycoon’s Daughter-in-Law is the English title, so I wonder if the Chinese heritage will play a part in the new remake. Here is the link to the teaser if you can’t see it above, and here is another teaser too. Also, this mv shows a lot details from the show.

What’s Next? Truth or Dare?

Another day, another marriage drama. Chinese drama Truth or Dare (2020) is a historical costume drama based on a novel about a couple of girls who step into the wrong carriage. It stars Teresa Li (My Classmate from Far Far Away), and Huang Jun Jie (Dr. Cutie) and should have 34 episodes. They released a trailer some months ago, but no news of a firm airing date of now, but I’ve waited to talk about this drama and didn’t want to wait longer.

Synopsis: A story that follows two couples who mistakenly find themselves in a marriage they never expected and gradually grow in love and trust over time. The cheerful and clever Xiao Wanzi grew up as a street performer with her dad selling their special skill of breaking a big stone on the chest. An unexpected encounter utterly changes Xiao Wangzi’s life. Xiao Wanzi who neither knew how to read nor write suddenly finds herself becoming a princess. Opposed to marrying the princess, Mei Sanshao pushes Xiao Wanzi away in hopes that she’d willingly retreat. Meanwhile, the king has arranged a marriage for Lu Yingyao, the daughter of the 9th prince. However, bandit Xiao Baoye mistakenly takes her as his wife.

Truth or Dare (2020) is the remake of 2001 Chinese drama Wrong Carriage, Right Groom (2001), which I’ve heard praised by a number of people, but unfortunately it’s not English subbed (there are a couple of subbed episodes on Youtube, but that’s it). This is a Mango TV drama and since they have a lot of their dramas English subbed on Youtube, hopefully this will be one of them, so check it out!
