Tuesday’s Teaser: A Love So Romantic

I’m going back and clearing out some of my old posts I’ve been working on and realized I forgot to post this. Sooo, here you go. This drama already started airing on Dec 24 and just finished on January 7 with 32 episodes.

A light hearted historical Chinese drama, A Love So Romantic might just be the romantic comedy I’ve been looking for this year. Yang Zhi Wen‘s first starring role pairs her with
Ye Sheng Jia (Endless Eighteen). This looks to be another bubbly young miss in love with a cold hearted man, but that can be fun if it’s done right. Another Tencent production that is already English subbed on youtube, A Love So Romantic will also be on viki.

Synopsis: As a flower girl, Su Xiao Wan never really imagined her simple life would ever be anything other than ordinary. But when an accidental mixup lands her in a sibling contract with Gu Yan Xi, the young master of the well-known Gu family, her simple life is flipped upside down. Now obligated to play the part of Gu Yan Xi’s younger sister, Xiao Wan finds herself tangled in the affairs of one of the most prominent business families in the land.

Constantly hounded by Yang Xi’s sharp tongue and ceaseless schemes, Xiao Wan is forced to rely on her quick wit and sly tricks, in order to survive. Never allowed a moment’s peace, Xiao Wan can only find respite while in the company of Gu Zi Qian, the family’s second master. A warm and caring young man, Zi Qian takes it upon himself to look after Xiao Wan, shielding her, whenever possible, from the constant pestering of his older brother. Unfortunately for Xiao Wan, Zi Qian’s kindness is fueled by his own secret ambitions.

Soon trapped in a complicated relationship with both Yang Xi and Zi Qian, Xiao Wan struggles to find a way out. As her head tells her to go one way, her heart tells her to go another; leaving Xiao Wan to wonder, which brother will ultimately help her find the happiness she desires? (Source: Viki)

2020 in Lakorns: Historicals

Welcome to lakornview’s 2020 in lakorns, where I go over what was English subbed of interest and also what lakorns should have been English subbed. I’ll have multiple posts on different genres and subjects, including about different trends in lakornland and what the future holds. This was a strange year, with COVID delaying the releases of many lakorns and a number of channels just played reruns, nevertheless, let’s begin with the historical genre.

2020 was kind of a bust for historical lakorns, although there were a fair number of time traveling lakorns, but straight historical lakorns were largely absent, unless you include the few historical/horror lakorns that went unsubbed this year. Maybe if we actually get a 2021 sequel to blockbuster historical 2018’s Bpoop Phaeh Saniwaat called Prom Likit (2021), historicals will see a revival in 2021, time will tell.

I discussed 2019 historical lakorns such as Thong Ake Mor Yah Tah Chaloang (2019), Krong Karm (2019) and more in this post here. I put all the English subbed lakorns in part 1 and if they were not subbed, but sounded interesting, or different and should be subbed, they were part 2. So you can check out these posts to see what you may have missed out on in 2019. So 2019 action lakorns part 1 here, part 2 here, 2019 comedy lakorns part 1 here, part 2 here, 2019 drama lakorns part 1 here, part 2 here.

ENGLISH SUBBED LAKORNS

Dung Duang Haruetai – The story of three kingdoms. Kasit ruled by King Rangsimun is the wealthiest and most powerful but they lack a sea route, for this reason King Rangsimun had planned to politically wed Princess Maneesala of Tanta in order to conveniently use their water route. However if both Kasit and Tanta were to unite that would cause Puntoolat to become isolated and for this reason the three kingdoms have longed lived with suspicion of one another.

Princess Maneesala decided to flee in order to escape the wedding because she had heard many ruthless stories about King Rangsimun but she accidentally fell into a trap and was rescued by Prince Tiyuttithorn/ P’Chai of Puntoolat where she asked to seek refuge.

Upon hearing the news of Princess Maneesala’s disappearance and learning that it may be linked to P’Chai, Princess Tatsiga feared the start of a war and so she made her way to speak to P’Chai and got kidnapped by King Rangsimun and brought to Kasit. Tatsiga believed she was kidnapped as a hostage in order for Kasit to negotiate Maneesala’s return and so she began at first to dislike Rangsimun. However Rangsimun had fell in love with Tatsiga at first sight and so began their love story. (Source: Sharerice)

Reason it’s interesting: This had to be one of the most anticipated historical lakorns of 2020, but most reviewers gave it an unfavorable review compared to the 1996 in terms of the romance and fantasy elements. Others enjoyed the 2nd couple’s story more and the costumes and cinematography of the lakorn. Still, it got a rating of 7.8 on mydramalist and it stars Tik Jesadaporn and Kimberley Voltemas, so if you’re a fan of either, this might be for you. This was subbed by Muse. Trailer

Leh Bunpakarn (2020) Plerngfah has ability to see the previous lives of people since he was young. His parent decided to move to live in the US in order to treat his strange symptoms. He is no longer able to see weird images or have dream. 20 years later, Plerngfah is back to live at Thailand and work as a news reporter for Channel 6. Several bombing with ancient traces happened cause him to meet Sitang, a young archeology professor. Then Plerngfah is able to see past lives again. He is sure that Sitang is his soulmate and they has been together for many lifetimes. However, enemies who cause chaos in their previous lives, still follow them to this world and swear to sperate Plerngfah and Sitang again.

Reason it’s interesting. James Jirayu and Taew Natapohn both have their fans who will definitely want to watch this. It also looks like there are many different past lives that the lakorn looks at, which made it confusing for some viewers. I also think James having special powers is an unique slant to the past lives genre. It is English subbed by Muse Trailer above.

Ruk Laek Pop (2020) – A modern day reckless influencer gets transported back into the past where he meets his look-alike great grandfather. To somehow get back to the present, he needs his great grandfather’s help. Matters get chaotic when he gets involved in his great grandfather’s love life. If he alters who his great grandmother is he would cease to exist. What valuable lessons will he learn and how will he return to the present?.

Reason it’s interesting? Film Thanapat, Vill Wannarot and Bifern Anchasa Mongkhonsamai all star in this lakorn, with Film playing dual roles. The lakorn also has an interesting plot, one I’ve seen before in western films like Back to the Future, but is new to Thailand lakorns I believe. The 28 episodes this lakorn has did put some viewers off, but other people loved the chemistry between the couples as well as the acting by the leads. This lakorn is on Muse’s site. Trailer

Sunya Ruk Sunya Luang (2020) A story transitioning between the past and present lives.

Reason it’s interesting? Denkhun Ngamnet plays a cop who meets a mysterious woman, played by Namwhan Phulita he takes a dislike too. And there’s another woman too who always seems to be around. There are unusual deaths occurring and the cop has to figure out what’s happening and why. I’ve just started watching this and am already intrigued by the story, which is a love triangle. So far most of the story has been in the present times, so I’m wondering how much the past plays a part in this. This is was subbed by Muse. Trailer above

Kadee Rak Kham Pop (2020) – Puncha is an investigator and met Dunchaya who happens to be the suspect in poisoning a victim by being the one who made the food. Because of fear, she ran away and Puncha chased her. They were in a boat and strange things happen leading them to two crossed back to 1913. Puncha had to temporarily stop investigations into the case of Dunchaya, and they were looking for a way back together, but the two were accidentally involved in a murder case. Looking for a way to get back from the present time, the two investigated the case but the matter was not as simple as the leads thought, many killed in a row and they have to find who is doing it. (Source: Qoo25)
(Source: MyDramaList)

Reason it’s interesting. Honestly I saw the 1st episode and wasn’t impressed. But this is only 10 episodes, and there are not a lot of other options for historical dramas this year, sooo. This is English subbed by Muse and Thippy Trailer

NO ENGLISH SUBS AVAILABLE

Toong Sanaeha (2020) – The story is set in the 1970s, in a small Thai village. Paitoon is in love with Yupin, whose father has gambling issues. They planned on getting married but Pao, his mother, doesn’t like Yupin and won’t accept their relationship because of her father. While Paitoon is in monkhood, Pao forces Yupin to marry Praiwan, Paitoon’s brother who’s suffering from polio since childhood. From now on, Yupin is Paitoon’s sister-in-law, but their love for each other has not gone away. Will they be able to overcome all obstacles and be together again? (Source: MyDramaList) ~~ Adapted from a novel of the same title by author Chulamani.
(Source: asianfuse.net)

Reason it’s interesting? As one of the few actual historical lakorns of 2020 that doesn’t involve time travel/past lives, it would be neat if this were English subbed. Both the director (Padiwaradda) and screenwriter (Klin Kasalong (2019)) have a lot of experience and done many historical lakorns, so this lakorn was in capable hands. Plus it stars actors such as Sorat Jaron, Toey Jarinporn and Noi Busakorn.

Wimarn Montra (2020) “There’s a past at this house, there’s death at this house, waiting will be over at this house.” She try to beat her rival because of being betrayed by her lover, decide to spell his spirit to be with her. She use a blood from innocent girl to live as immortal. Waiting for new perfect body of her lover. (Source: thaidramatic_update)
(Source: MyDramaList)

Reason it’s interesting? Yui Chiranan and BigM Krittarit star in this lakorn that aired on Channel 7. This is another past/present lives lakorn which seems fairly interesting from its trailer.

Pbop Phee Jao (2020) A young woman born with the fortune of a ghost’s successor But then you have to lose everything, including your lover. She tries to resurrect her lover from the dead until the end. At the prison with malice and waiting for the day the lover will return again.

700 years later, at Wiang Pha Chan, there is a big miracle. Awakening from a long and warm sleep in Chiang Rai city, Wiang Pha Chan has two wives, Mae Chao Thong-On. Who are pregnant and mother, mother-in-law from foreigners who try to not be pregnant

Returning to Wiang Pha Chan as the new mother of the Holy Hall Mother’s bracelet is to ask for the devil’s teacher. She conjured the soul into the belly of the bracelet and provided that, at the age of 20, that child had to become the heir of the death. Thongthong’s mother gave birth to an ugly baby, named Khamthong. In the middle of the night.

One night Ruang found Khamthong eating the victim, knowing that she was ghoul. Rueang would like to help her. Therefore will take her to see Luang Pho. But in the end, the words were not expensive to the appointment Bearing until trying to find the ring Showing that the ring is ugly and pregnant Ring lying that this is because of the expensive gold. Causing Rage to become angry and to plan to subdue the ghoul by luring expensive gold words to meet Reverend Father When she realized it, he was feuding and bearing out the heart to eat. Ring gave birth and died immediately. Doctor Phaseng, a medicine doctor who helped deliver babies to escape from Wiang. While the golden expensive words fled. (Source: thairath)

Reason it’s interesting? Uhhhh. This stars Smart Krissada and Natharika Thamapreedanan, among other actors, on Channel 8 and seems to be one of the few horror historicals of 2020. There was also a sequel that aired this year as well, which really surprised me because it’s not often this type of genre gets a sequel. Pbop Phee Jao 2 (2020) seems to have most of the same cast. Trailer.

What’s Next – Ruk Laek Pop

We have another lakorn airing soon, Ruk Laek Pop, which is a historical, time traveling lakorn I’ve already talked about before. Anchasa (nickname Bifern) Mongkhonsamai, Vill Wannarot and Film Thanapat star in this GMM One lakorn which airs June 15, 2020. No word yet on if it will be subbed.

Credit: onenung53’s ig

Synopsis: A modern day reckless influencer gets transported back into the past where he meets his look-alike great grandfather. To somehow get back to the present, he needs his great grandfather’s help. Matters get chaotic when he gets involved in his great grandfather’s love life. If he alters who his great grandmother is he would cease to exist. What valuable lessons will he learn and how will he return to the present?

This looks to be a time traveling lakorn, starring Film Thanapat, Bifern Mongkhonsamai, both of whom I’m not familiar with and my favorite Vill Wannarot. Probably Film will have one of the ladies as a love interest in both modern day (Bifern) and historical period (Vill) if we just go by the poster. There is a comedy feel to the teaser, but the synopsis speaks to possible heartbreak, so I’m interested to see how this plays out.

Historical genre

I took a look at 2019 historical lakorns here. Now here’s an updated look at the historical genre. I included the many lakorns that have a past and present life, as well as time travel lakorns, ghost/horror lakorns and so on. So if you want to see what’s out there, take a look at this list! This is not a complete list by any means, this includes lakorns that are English subbed only.

Buang (2012)

Buang (2012) – not that similar, but does feature a vengeful ghost, black magic and past and present.

Buang Banjathorn 2017 – Nang’ek travels to past through magic bed, different time period and not focused on politics as much.

Karm Wayla Tharm Ha Ruk – man travels to the future, instead of past.

Tawipob/Tawee Pope – like BPS, nang’ek travels back to past and falls in love.

Wan Sawart (2015) – twins like BPS, but no time traveling, but talks about past life.

TOP 3 – Upcoming Historical Lakorns

I’m liking the fact that lakorns are becoming more diverse in plot and genre. A woman with a medical background solving mysteries in a historical period? Sounds like China’s Miss Truth (2020). But no, it’s actually one of several upcoming lakorns I’m looking forwards to.

1. Lai Kinnaree (2020) – This lakorn stands out for several reasons. 1. It stars Nadech Kugimiya, Yaya Urassaya 2. It takes place in the Ayutthaya period of time 3. It’s about a woman with medical knowledge she uses to solve cases and mysteries. More pics here and here.

Synopsis: The reign of King Narai was the most prosperous during the Ayutthaya period. Ayutthaya kingdom at that time has great commercial and diplomatic activities with all foreign nations especially the west. Everywhere was full of foreign immigrants, merchants, missionaries diplomats and military personnel. Foreigners especially westerners were backed to oppress Ayautthaya people causing the rage among Ayutthaya people. Lady Pudsorn is the beautiful daughter of a famous deceased doctor. She well inherited medical knowledge from her father. Aok Luang (Viscount) Indra Ratchpakdee is a handsome police nobleman who is responsible for the peace and safety of people in the metropolitan area. Monsieur Robert is a handsome French guy who closes to an important French military diplomat whom King Narai borrowed from King of France to work for. Faith brought the three of them to met and work together in investigating the suspicious death of an important French cargo ship captain who died while wearing female sarong cloth with Lai Kinaree (Half Bird Half Human) patterned which is the kind of pattern prohibited for royal ladies in the palace only. Therefore this case has the existence of Ayutthaya Kindom at stake because it may trigger the war by being claimed as a rightful cause for the French army to seize Ayutthaya Kindom. The investigation leads the three of them to many somehow involved people, many stories and many suspects which each of them has unexpectable secrets. Moreover, one of the suspects is a very powerful lady in the royal palace too. Besides that, the investigation also leads those two gorgeous and high-profiled guys to fall for Lady Pudsorn and both of them ready to compete to win her heart. What should Lady Pudsorn do? (Source: Asianfuse & ShareRice)

2. Dung Duang Haruetai – This will be the 2nd remake of the popular lakorn and it stars Tik Jesadaporn, Kimberly Voltemas as the main couple. I’ve posted before about the detailed, if sometimes questionable fashions of the lakorn. It will be interesting to see if it holds up to the previous versions.

Synopsis: The story of three kingdoms. Kasit ruled by King Rungsimun is the wealthiest and most powerful but they lack a sea route, for this reason, King Rungsimun had planned to politically wed Princess Munisala of Thanta in order to conveniently use their water route. However if both Kasit and Thanta were to unite that would cause Puntoolat to become isolated and for this reason, the three kingdoms have longed lived with suspicion of one another. Princess Munisala decided to flee in order to escape the wedding because she had heard many ruthless stories about King Rungsimun but she accidentally fell into a trap and was rescued by Prince Tiyuttithorn/ Pee Chai of Puntoolat where she asked to seek refuge. Upon hearing the news of Princess Munisala’s disappearance and learning that it may be linked to Pee Chai, Princess Tasika feared the start of a war and so she made her way to speak to Pee Chai and got kidnapped by King Rungsimun and brought to Kasit. Tasika believed she was kidnapped as a hostage in order for Kasit to negotiate Munisala’s return and so she began at first to dislike Rungsimun. However Rungsimun had fallen in love with Tasika at first sight and so began their love story, but things get complicated as Mina constantly stirs up trouble, by trying to harm Tasika as she was in love with Rungsimun. Meanwhile, Munisala and Tiyuttithorn also started to slowly fall in love. Matters get complicated as Mina’s father committed treason against Rungsimun. (Source: Sharerice) (Source: MyDramaList)

3. Prom Likit – Not much is known about this except it’s a sequel to Bpoop Phaeh Saniwaat (2018) and the main couple of Bella Ranee and Pope Thanawat will be returning. Also returning is the director Mai Phawat Panangkasiri, but Louis Scott won’t be returning. This will have an opening ceremony on May 2020. It remains to be seen whether it will air in 2020, but is a couple worth waiting for!

Synopsis– This sequel is set in King Thai Sa’s reign (1709-1732) and will focus on Por Date and Kadesurang’s kids 20 years after Bpoop Phaeh Saniwaat’s ending.

What are your top 3?

What’s Next?

Outside of the plot and actors, one of the things that will always catch my attention about upcoming dramas is fashion. The look of a production, the beauty of sets or scenes, anything of that nature. This time, it was the fashion of Ruk Laek Pop (2020) that caught my eye.

This looks to be a time traveling lakorn, starring Film Thanapat, whom I’m not familiar with and the lovely Vill Wannarot, but not many other details have surfaced yet as the lakorn is still filming.

I really love the simple elegance of the costumes. And look at the beautiful framing and contrast in the shot below. I’ll definitely be looking for more news on this lakorn in the future.

Tuesday’s Teaser: Toong Sanaeha

Toong Sanaeha (2020) is coming soon to Channel 3 on February 16, 2020. It stars Top Jaron, Toey Jarinporn, and Bomb Tanin in what looks to be a love triangle. There is forbidden love, forced marriage and it’s set in the 1970s, which is an unusual historical time period for lakorns to be set in. No word yet if it will be subbed.

Toong Sanaeha (2020) The story is set in the 1970s, in a small Thai village. People wear masks in public, hiding their true nature. And sometimes, the pretense continues in private life as well. Disguises, hidden/secret identities, mysteries, secrets. This week, so stay tuned.

With nang’ek Kadesurang in Bpoop Phaeh Saniwaat (2018), she doesn’t have a choice in pretending to be someone else. She’s in another woman’s body, so she must pretend to be her. I don’t think Kadesurang really tries hard to pretend to be Karakade though. Her modern behaviors and attitudes are frequently displayed and commented on.

Credit: achimay14 yt channel

Bpoop Phaeh Saniwaat (2018) synopsis: Kadesurang is a 25-year-old chubby archaeologist. One day she suffers an accident after meeting Karakade’s ghost and goes back in time to the Ayutthaya era around 300 years ago. She wakes up in Karakade’s dead body right after she died. Karakade was a very mean and selfish person. Everyone hated her, especially her betrothed Date, who liked another girl but his dad and Karakade’s dad were best friends and they promised that their kids would marry each other. Karakade tries to kill her rival but her rival’s servant dies instead. Date and his dad chant a spell in order to punish the culprit, which results in Karakade’s death. After Kadesurang wakes up in Karakade’s body, everyone around her is confused now that she’s acting like a completely different person. But her optimistic and playful personality slowly wins over everyone, including Date, who falls in love with the new Karakade. (Source: Written by MyDramaList

A better example of someone pretending to be someone else might be the kdrama Resurrection (2005). The hero pretends to be his brother, adopting his mannerisms, and behavior and in the process, almost loses his own identity.

Happy New Year!!! I’ve spent a lot of time going back over the lakorns of 2019 the last few weeks, so I’m going to start looking more to 2020 this week. Lots of previews and such. But I will also be talking about what I watched this year, what I dropped and so on this week.

For now, one of the first lakorn releases of this year was a historical lakorn, Wimarn Montra (2020). It aired on January 4 on Channel 7 and here is an ost from it. It looks to be a reincarnation lakorn with past and present themes and lots of angst and tragedy. No idea if this will be subbed or not. Enjoy!

Wimarn Montra (2020) synopsis: “There’s a past at this house, there’s death at this house, waiting will be over at this house.” She try to beat her rival because of being betrayed by her lover, decide to spell his spirit to be with her. She use a blood from innocent girl to live as immortal. Waiting for new perfect body of her lover. (Source: thaidramatic_update)
