What’s Next? Hello Mr. Gu (2021)

More Chinese dramas with contract relationships on the way? Yes please! Hello Mr. Gu (2021) stars newbies Chen Jing Ke (The Legend of Jin Yan (2020)) as a CEO and Yan Zhi Chao as two people who enter into a contract marriage together. This is a Tencent production and it should have English subs. The drama stars airing March 30, 2021 three days a week.

Tuesday’s Teaser: Road to Rebirth (2021)

I’ve had my eye on Road to Rebirth (2021) for awhile now, only it wasn’t called that, it was called Romance With the Star (2020) and seemed like yet another modern cdrama about a celebrity and common person falling in love. It stars Jerry Jia (Pushing Hands (2019)) as the celebrity, and Ivy Chen (Love is in the Air (2018)) becomes his personal maid. The teaser has a fair amount of drama and angst in it, so it looks to be comic lite. Hopefully, this will be English subbed as the trailer is from Yoyo’s channel, so you can catch this airing on March 17, 2021, 7 days a week 😲.

Synopsis: A story between celebrity and a neighborhood girl who becomes his manager. Because of her cousin, Sun Xia Ai is swayed into accepting the job to become a personal maid for hotshot celebrity Su Xing. After spending day after day together, Sun Xiao Ai discovers a side of Su Xing that nobody knows – he helps children with their schooling, reaches out to sick fans and would rather take a hit in his own reputation in order to protect his younger sister. Sun Xiao Ai finds herself falling for Su Xing and chooses to stay by his side even as his star has fallen out of the limelight. Together, Su Xing and his new manager Xiao Ai decide to make a comeback in the industry. (Source; ChineseDrama.info)

Celebrities falling in love with an ordinary person is a pretty common genre, look at You’re Beautiful, Soot Sanaeha, Full House, Touch Your Heart, Payakorn Sorn Ruk and so on. However, this cdrama also has the hero recovering from some sort of injury that lands him in a wheelchair, so that is a little different. The teaser is all over the place really, and I don’t understand what’s going on, but because of my love for all the dramas above, I’ll probably will try this out.

What’s Next? Truth or Dare?

Another day, another marriage drama. Chinese drama Truth or Dare (2020) is a historical costume drama based on a novel about a couple of girls who step into the wrong carriage. It stars Teresa Li (My Classmate from Far Far Away), and Huang Jun Jie (Dr. Cutie) and should have 34 episodes. They released a trailer some months ago, but no news of a firm airing date of now, but I’ve waited to talk about this drama and didn’t want to wait longer.

Synopsis: A story that follows two couples who mistakenly find themselves in a marriage they never expected and gradually grow in love and trust over time. The cheerful and clever Xiao Wanzi grew up as a street performer with her dad selling their special skill of breaking a big stone on the chest. An unexpected encounter utterly changes Xiao Wangzi’s life. Xiao Wanzi who neither knew how to read nor write suddenly finds herself becoming a princess. Opposed to marrying the princess, Mei Sanshao pushes Xiao Wanzi away in hopes that she’d willingly retreat. Meanwhile, the king has arranged a marriage for Lu Yingyao, the daughter of the 9th prince. However, bandit Xiao Baoye mistakenly takes her as his wife.

Truth or Dare (2020) is the remake of 2001 Chinese drama Wrong Carriage, Right Groom (2001), which I’ve heard praised by a number of people, but unfortunately it’s not English subbed (there are a couple of subbed episodes on Youtube, but that’s it). This is a Mango TV drama and since they have a lot of their dramas English subbed on Youtube, hopefully this will be one of them, so check it out!

Tuesday’s Teaser: The Sword and The Brocade (2021)

Based off a popular novel, and starring well known leads, costume Chinese drama, The Sword and The Brocade (2021) also features an arranged marriage story with the couple falling in love and growing to depend on each other after their marriage. Awww. 😍

Wallace Chung (General and I) and Seven Tan (Under the Power (2019)) are the main couple and will have 45 episodes in which to prove their forever love. This Tencent production airs February 26, 2021 three days and week and will be English subbed on Viki, as well as WeTv and possibly Tencent’s own yt channel also, so lots of places to find this drama.

Synopsis: Set during the Ming Dynasty, the story revolves around the romance between General Xu Lingyi and the concubine’s daughter Shiyiniang that starts from an arranged marriage. She hopes to rely on her embroidery skills as a ticket to freedom. However, the once esteemed Luo family is in a state of decline.

Hoping to save the clan through a marriage alliance, Shiyiniang is selected to become the wife of Yongping Duke and great general Xu Lingyi. Things were not easy for Shiyiniang due to the Xu family’s biases towards her. Nonetheless, she manages to win over their trust through her optimism and sincerity. Xu Lingyi also becomes attracted to Shiyiniang’s various beautiful qualities such that husband and wife manage to find love after marriage.

Through Xu Lingyi’s support, Shiyiniang opens Xian Ling Pavillion to have her own embroidery workshop. Meanwhile, Xu Lingyi experiences many setbacks as he tries to protect his homeland and improve the livelihood of the people by supporting the lifting of a maritime ban. What’s Next? Rebirth For You (2021)

Really loving the pics from yet another Chinese drama about a married couple, this time it’s Rebirth For You (2021). You might have seen female lead Ju Jing Yi in The Blooms at Ruyi Pavilion and male lead Joseph Zeng from The Journey Across the Night (2020). This is a new pairing for the couple, but both the director Zhi Lei and the screenwriter Ju Fang Fang have worked with Ju Jing Yi before. I already love the stills from this drama so looking forwards to it. This is a Tencent production that has no air date yet, but hopefully will be English subbed.

Synopsis: Story of how Jiang Baoning uses her capability to balance the different forces in the imperial court, and together with her husband Li Qian, helps the young Emperor stabilize the court and create a peaceful golden era. (Source: DramaWiki) *Adapted from novel of the same name by Zhi Zhi

Directors are Cheng Yuan Hai (Ruyi’s Royal Love in the Palace), and
Hou Yong (A World Without Thieves). No word yet on the screenwriter, but I’m hoping Rebirth For You (2021) is another great palace drama akin to my favorite Story of Yanxi Palace (which was 70 episodes and mostly mesmerizing in spite of that fact).

Tuesday’s Teaser: A Love So Romantic

I’m going back and clearing out some of my old posts I’ve been working on and realized I forgot to post this. Sooo, here you go. This drama already started airing on Dec 24 and just finished on January 7 with 32 episodes.

A light hearted historical Chinese drama, A Love So Romantic might just be the romantic comedy I’ve been looking for this year. Yang Zhi Wen‘s first starring role pairs her with
Ye Sheng Jia (Endless Eighteen). This looks to be another bubbly young miss in love with a cold hearted man, but that can be fun if it’s done right. Another Tencent production that is already English subbed on youtube, A Love So Romantic will also be on viki.

Synopsis: As a flower girl, Su Xiao Wan never really imagined her simple life would ever be anything other than ordinary. But when an accidental mixup lands her in a sibling contract with Gu Yan Xi, the young master of the well-known Gu family, her simple life is flipped upside down. Now obligated to play the part of Gu Yan Xi’s younger sister, Xiao Wan finds herself tangled in the affairs of one of the most prominent business families in the land.

Constantly hounded by Yang Xi’s sharp tongue and ceaseless schemes, Xiao Wan is forced to rely on her quick wit and sly tricks, in order to survive. Never allowed a moment’s peace, Xiao Wan can only find respite while in the company of Gu Zi Qian, the family’s second master. A warm and caring young man, Zi Qian takes it upon himself to look after Xiao Wan, shielding her, whenever possible, from the constant pestering of his older brother. Unfortunately for Xiao Wan, Zi Qian’s kindness is fueled by his own secret ambitions.

Soon trapped in a complicated relationship with both Yang Xi and Zi Qian, Xiao Wan struggles to find a way out. As her head tells her to go one way, her heart tells her to go another; leaving Xiao Wan to wonder, which brother will ultimately help her find the happiness she desires? (Source: Viki)

What’s Next? Monarch Industry (2021)

Dramas about married couples are my favorite genre, so this Chinese drama Monarch Industry (2021) is on my list to watch. With a well known cast, it stars the famous movie actress Zhang Zi Yi (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon ), Zhou Yi Wei (New Face (2020)) and Tony Yang (Lady & Liar). There should be lots of palace intrigue, power struggle and more in Monarch Industry (2021) which is supposed to have 80 episodes. 80 episodes is ginormous, but I think under the right direction, writers and production, this could be done (plus episodes are only 45 mins long). This is a Youku drama has a lot of people interested so I’m sure it’ll be English subbed. The drama will start airing on January 9, 2021

Synopsis: The imperial power is decaying, and the nobles are extravagant, regardless of the lives and deaths of the people. The king of the county, Wang Hao, and the first love of the three emperors, the young and beautiful, were entangled in the battle for the prophecy of “getting the best of the world.” Become a father’s chess piece, marry the Yuzhang Wang Xiaoyu who is given the cold door.

On the night of the wedding, Xiao Yu was forced to leave the capital, and Wang Hao was shamed and disheartened. Prince Helan was tied to Wang Hao to seek revenge for Xiao Yu, and the husband and wife both became acquainted with each other in disguise. Wang Hao was moved by Xiao Yu’s wish to protect the world’s people. The two men separated from each other because of the struggle between the two kings and the Xie. The two men have gone through many hardships to reunite and defeat the rebels.

When the rebellion rebelled, Wang Hao desperately sent the unintentional son to Beijing to protect him. Wang Hao took the soldiers to defend the city, and died in his life. He finally stood by Xiao Yu, who was in the chaos of the border. In the end, the husband and wife will work together to create a new era to protect the people of the country. Based on the novel of the same name. (Source: baike.baidu.com (translation by Google))

What’s Next? Invisible Life (2020)

Another Chinese drama that I’m looking forward to is Invisible Life (2020), which stars famous Hong Kong actor Hawick Lau (Sealed with a Kiss, Lady & Liar ) and Chen Du Ling (Another Me (2019)). Invisible Life (2020) follows a relationship between a boss and his employee from the beginning until marriage and beyond. The dramas starts on December 9, and should have 40 episodes. This Hunan TV drama should be up on youtube and viki so it should be English subbed.

Synopsis: In order to avoid her mother meddling in her love life, Ye Xiao Bai joins a business project that strict boss Guan Yi He is running. The two end up falling in love and having a secret relationship because their workplace doesn’t allow romance between colleagues. They end up marrying and establishing a family in secret, and Xiao Bai thinks life is going well, but the pressure of keeping their relationship a secret puts a strain on their family. Other problems arise both personally and professionally, opening Xiao Bai’s eyes to the issues women face in the workplace and the struggle to balance work and family. The naive girl learns to be stronger, advancing at work and protecting her family and marriage. (Source: Baidu)

What’s Next? New Face (2020)

Another intriguing Chinese drama is airing now, New Face (2020). This cdrama revolving around a stolen identity stars Zhou Yi Wei (The Longest Day in Chang’an) and Mabel Yuan Shan (Above the Clouds) along with Chi Jia and Cao Xi Wen. It started airing on November 24, two days a week and Tencent production may have English subs.

Synopsis: Pan, a desolate plastic surgeon, lived a repetitive and boring life every day until a conspiracy happened. He woke up in an abandoned factory, and found that someone had replaced his identity with a face exactly like him. His world has been completely overturned and left in a perilous situation. A Trio of Dramas You Might have Missed

I’ve a number of dramas I’m interested in that I haven’t talked about because my time is limited, but I wanted to promote these dramas, not sure if they’re good or not, one hasn’t come out yet, but I wanted to at least talk about them a little bit. Except for the 1st drama, these dramas are light on romance, so read on if you’re still interested.

Neechan no Koibito (2020)

Synopsis: When Momoko Adachi was in high school, her parents died in an accident. She was left with her 3 younger siblings. To support her family, Momoko Adachi gave up on going to a university and picked up a job at a hardware store. 9 years later, she is now 27-years-old. She is attracted to Yoshioka-san, who smiles all the time, but he has a secret. (Source: AsianWiki)

(Source: mydramalist.com)

I find the plot appealing and I’ve been watching for a Japanese dorama to watch. This started airing October 27, 2020 and only airs 1 day a week. Arimura Kasumi stars as the female lead who meets and has a romance with Yoshioka-san, played by Hayashi Kento. This is being played on Fuji TV and hopefully some kind soul will English sub this.

Insect Detective (2020)

Synopsis: The police are investigating a case that involves a death directly caused by a rare bug known as the bullet ant. In order to clear his name, Tan Jingtian, an Insect toxicology graduate becomes involved in the bizarre investigation and collaborates with forensic doctor Jin Ling. Along with police captain Chen Han and the other detectives, they trace every clue as they solve one case at a time to uncover the murderer that has been in hiding for many years. Okay, insects creep me out a little, but still or because of that, the title of this Chinese drama caught my eye, Insect Detective (2020). Insect Detective (2020) started airing November 3 and airs three days a week on Youku so there is a possibly that it might be English subbed. The trailer is intriguing enough so I might have to overcome my natural aversion to insects and give it a try.

Healer of Children (2020)

Healer of Children (2020) caught my attention as well because of the title and the poster. It stars Chen Xiao (Above the Clouds) and Wang Zi Wen (When a Snail Falls in Love) and this is touted as more of a slice of life drama, so I wonder if romance will play a part. This starts airing on November 30, 2020.
