A Chinese drama that has been creating a lot of buzz since it started filming, The Golden Hairpinstars Kris Wu in his debut as a drama actor and Yang Zi (Ashes of Love) . The Golden Hairpinhas an intriguing concept of a young girl going undercover to solve crimes in a historical drama. This Tencent/Hunan TV drama should be up on youtube and I’m sure it’ll be English subbed.
Synopsis: At thirteen, investigative prodigy Huang Zixia had already proved herself by aiding her father in solving confounding crimes. At seventeen, she’s on the run, accused of murdering her family to escape an arranged marriage. Driven by a single-minded pursuit, she must use her skills to unmask the real killer…and clear her name. But when Huang Zixia seeks the help of Li Shubai, the Prince of Kui, her life and freedom are bargained: agree to go undercover as his eunuch to stop a serial killer and to undo a curse that threatens to destroy the Prince’s life. Huang Zixia’s skills are soon tested when Li Shubai’s betrothed vanishes. With a distinctively exquisite golden hairpin as her only clue, Huang Zixia investigates—and discovers that she isn’t the only one in the guarded kingdom with a dangerous secret.
Director Lin Yu Fen (Eternal Love (2017), Lost Love in Times) is at the helm of this drama. The screenwriter is Wong Lei Chi who also wrote 2011’s blockbuster Scarlet Heart (and its sequel 😎) so this cdrama has a great team and I’m hopeful it can live up to its hype.
Anyone remember Peter Ho of Summer’s Desire (2010)? Or from Le Jun Kai (2013)? While he is now a director and screenwriter, he still acts occasionally and will be the main lead in Chinese drama Xifei’s Royal Love in the Palace (2020). This drama also stars He Hong Shan in a marriage of convenience story that sounds promising. As this a Tencent drama, it should be up on youtube and I’m sure it’ll be English subbed.
Synopsis: Qing Lian is content to lead an ordinary life and aspires for a suitor who only has eyes for her, yet is instead forced to marry into the royal family. She discovers her husband He Lian Xin is not the heartless and stone-faced noble he presents himself to be, and secretly helps him navigate the treacherous waters, earning his affection and respect in the process. ~~ Based on Legend of Consort Xi by Jieyu.
Could anyone really watch all the Chinese dramas being produced? They seem so prolific but maybe I’m imagining things? Anyway, here’s another drama that caught my attention, this time it’s Please Feel at Ease Mr. Ling (2021). I really loved female lead Rosy Zhao in The Romance of Tiger and Rose, don’t know the male lead Terry Liu from My Dear Lady (2020) though. The story reminds me of kdrama Save the Last Dance for Me 2004 with the guy having amnesia and meeting the heroine before going back to his regular life. A Youku production coming to you May 20, 2021, hopefully will be English subbed.
Synopsis: A story of how the ‘rabbit’ brings home a ‘big bad wolf’ follows a young woman named Gu An Xin who chances upon the hotshot executive Ling Yue after he encountered an accident. Gu An Xin picked up a man. At first, she thought he was stupid, but after a few days of interaction, he proves himself to be a genius. As it turns out, Ling Yue got into an accident after being caught in the ugly fight for succession of a powerful conglomerate. With two people so different from each other living together, what kind of relationship will it bring? Hmm, hate to love, celebrity, reality tv show, cohabitation. Okay, this sounds right up my alley. I’ve been searching for a good Korean romantic comedy, tried Oh My Ladylord, True Beauty and more but just couldn’t get past the first couple of episodes or so. So I Married an Anti-Fan (2021) is based on a webtoon and stars Choi Soo Young (Run On), and Choi Tae Joon (Missing 9). This romantic comedy airs on various channels starting on April 30, 2021, and should be English subbed on Viki, Amazon Prime and elsewhere.
Synopsis: Hoo Joon is a top star while Geun Young is a magazine reporter. For a potential news article, Geun Young decides to attend an opening ceremony for a club. There, she witnesses top star Hoo Joon’s violent behavior and she also vomits on him by accident. This leads to Geun Young losing her job. Believing that Hoo Joon was behind her firing, she decides to get him back by demonstrating in front of Hoo Joons management office. Slowly, she begins to receive media coverage on her demonstration and soon becomes famous as an anti-fan. A PD approaches Geun Young about participating in a reality TV show which revolves around the idea of a top star and their anti-fan living together. Being unemployed, she decides to accept the offer. Meanwhile, Hoo Joon is offered the same reality TV show and accepts to try to improve his image. Hoo Joon and Geun Young try to give each other a hard time on the reality show, but soon start to fall for one another. This upcoming marriage Japanese dorama calledRikokatsu (2021) gained my attention because of the older than usual cast in these marriage dramas. Nagayama Eita, who starred in another troubled marriage drama Saikou no Rikon, plays the hubby and Kitagawa Keiko (Tantei no Tantei ) is his not so adoring wife. Both actors are well known, and I’ve watched them both and look forward to watching them again in this dorama. It starts airing April 16, 2021 on TBS, and a subbing group will English sub it.

There’s a rather intriguing upcoming mystery Japanese dorama coming soon called Borderless (2021). I really love the mood and lighting in the teaser and the whole aesthetics of the dorama and even the cover poster. With 4 separate stories that are somehow connected to each other, this is very much a girl centered drama, look at this main cast list: Morita Hikaru, Hayakawa Seira, Watanabe Risa, Hamagishi Hiyori, Endo Sakura, and Saito Kyoko. The dorama starts airing March 7, 2021 on dTV, and hopefully someone will English sub it.

Based off a popular novel, and starring well known leads, costume Chinese drama, The Sword and The Brocade (2021) also features an arranged marriage story with the couple falling in love and growing to depend on each other after their marriage. Awww. 😍

Really loving the pics from yet another Chinese drama about a married couple, this time it’s Rebirth For You (2021). You might have seen female lead Ju Jing Yi in The Blooms at Ruyi Pavilion and male lead Joseph Zeng from The Journey Across the Night (2020). This is a new pairing for the couple, but both the director Zhi Lei and the screenwriter Ju Fang Fang have worked with Ju Jing Yi before. I already love the stills from this drama so looking forwards to it. This is a Tencent production that has no air date yet, but hopefully will be English subbed.
