What’s Next – Talay Luang (2020)?

Mik Thongraya has already had 2 lakorns come out in 2020, the newly airing Jark Sadtroo Soo Hua Jai (which is being subbed by Neko and Muse) and Sapai Import (subbed by Muse), but there’s always room for one more, right? Talay Luang (2020) is an upcoming Channel 7 lakorn starring Mik Thongraya and Sammy Cowell (Lhong Ngao Jun (2019). I like both actors and look forward to this pairing. No word yet on who will sub this, but both actors have their fan groups, so I’m hopeful it will be English subbed.

Synopsis: A strange man with amnesia appears on an island; there he meets Moya, begins to fall in love and starts building her an island resort. Against the warnings of her best friend, Moya starts to fall in love with him too. However just as their love blooms, a pregnant woman arrives claiming the man is her husband. She takes him back. So Moya tries to forget him, but he returns with memories intact as a player. (Source:thaidramatic_update)

I was wondering whether this is a new pairing, but apparently Sammy Cowell and Mik Thongraya have been in two series together, Paragit Ruk Series and The Fire Series, but they weren’t a couple in either one. This seems like it could be a remake of Prince Turns to Frog (2005), where a man with amnesia falls for a girl, but no, a Thailand remake of that drama is already in the works at GMM called Rak Woon Wai Jao Chai Kob (2020) so this may just be an original story. Regardless, I do like this type of story, so I’m looking forward to when it airs.

Tuesday’s Teaser: Nee Kiattiyot

Finally, a lakorn I’m interested in watching. Nee Kiattiyot (2020) begins November 3 on Channel 7 and has the nang’ek trying to cope after the death of her father and learning about the circumstances behind his death. It stars Maggi Apa (Suparburoot Jorm Jon: Duang Jai Kabot) and Oath Ratthee in what appears to be his first starring role. This lakorn airs weekdays, at 50min each. Neko has this on her list, so it should be English subbed.

Synopsis: An irresponsible father dies by suicide, leaving all his family to shoulder the responsibility of repaying his gambling debts to gangs and loan sharks. In addition, his son needs to care for his sick mother, and a sister oblivious to their suffering who enjoys nothing more than shopping her life away. What will Pan Tawan do? What’s Up? Begin Again (2020)

This is interesting. Another cdrama coming up about a contract marriage between a doctor and a female CEO and what makes it interesting is that it is a remake of a Thai drama. Begin Again (2020) is a remake of a 2001 Thai lakorn, Samee Ngern Phon (2001) otherwise known as The Bought Husband. Zhou Yu Tong (Young Blood) is the CEO and Simon Gong (The Love Equations (2020) as the doctor will get their chance to improve upon the original starting October 29. It airs 3 days a week on Mango TV, so here’s the first episode here, no English subtitles though. Hopefully someone will sub it 🤞.

Source: MGTV Drama Channel yt

Synopsis: It tells the story of a domineering female CEO and a warm doctor who turn a fake relationship into reality due to practical reasons. Having exchanged their ‘I do’s’, they start on a new chapter of their lives as they learn to fall in love. Lu Fangning is the general manager of Luning Group, a large corporation in the business of home furniture. Lu Fangning is a woman who has it all – talented, beautiful and rich. Nearing her thirties, Lu Fangning succumbs to family pressures and decides that she urgently needs a husband with whom she will have a child.

Coincidentally, surgeon Ling Rui appears in front of her. Ling Rui is not only blessed with good looks but also has an angelic heart, which makes him the perfect candidate in the eyes of Lu Fangning. She schemes her way to his life and they finally become husband and wife. Lu Fangning eventually realizes the error in her ways and strives to be better. However, keeping a marriage is not as easy as it seems. (Source: ChineseDrama.info

The lakorn Samee Ngern Phon (2001) was remade again as Piang Chai Khon Nee Mai Chai Poo Wised (2016) with Kimberley Voltemas and James Ma, the version most lakorn fans are probably more familiar with. In the original 2001 version, the marriage that took place was arranged by their family, and that doesn’t appear to be the case in Begin Again (2020), so already the cdrama looks like it will differ from the original, which is not a bad thing. One of the main complaints I’ve read and seen (I did watch most of the 2001 version) was that the male lead was too weak and let everyone, including his ex girlfriend, walk all over him. And yes, this did have a horrible nang’rai, a female second lead who clung to the hero and tried to get them to break up, but hopefully this version will tone that down. A lot. Or at least make her somehow likable?

What’s Next? Daily Dramas – PHoenix 2020

I’ve not really watched a daily drama in full, but I thought I’ll talk a little about Korean daily dramas and in specific, a new one that caught my attention, Phoenix 2020. It stars Hong Soo Ah (Love to the End) and Lee Jae Woo (Sweet Enemy) in a story about second chances as a couple reunites after 10 years apart. This daily drama started airing already on October 26, 2020 on SBS so it probably will be English subbed.

Daily dramas in Korea usually are 30 min long and run every weekday, from Monday to Friday. They are often 100-120 episodes or longer and they usually are night time dramas. These dramas often feature families, revenge, melodrama and even makjang, super craziness. Ugly Alert (2013) is one example of a highly rated and recommended daily drama to start with.

Synopsis: Belonging to the wealthiest class and as the daughter of an influential chaebol family in Korea, Ji Eun grew up with everything. When she meets Se Hoon, who comes from an underprivileged family, he treats her like no other, and she falls in love with him. Although Ji Eun’s family opposes their relationship, they get married. However, due to reoccurring conflicts, Ji Eun and Se Hoon become exhausted and end their marriage.

Ten years later, fate ironically reverses their lives. Se Hoon, who is now a successful man, buys Ji Eun’s house out of revenge. But when he stands in front of her as Willian Jang, he only wants to help her. Nonetheless, there is Mi Ran, with whom he is in a serious relationship with, and next to Ji Eun is her new love, Jung Min, who is devoted to her. This drama is the 2020 version of the intertwined fates of four people’s love. (Source: KOCOWA)

Phoenix 2020 is the latest daily drama to hit the airwaves. Based on a 2004 26 episode titular kdrama by the same writer, Lee Yoo Jin, who also wrote the highly rated Missing Noir M (2015) and Team Bulldog: Off-duty Investigation (2020). It would be interesting if she took suspense and thriller elements and added them to the daily drama format (outside of the, finding the person who did ??? so I can get revenge on them), as that’s not normally present in daily dramas.

Tuesday’s Teaser: Jark Sadroo Soo Hua Jai

Another action lakorn from Channel 7. Jark Sadtroo Soo Hua Jai (2020) caught my eye because it stars Mik Thongraya and Aum Patcharapa, not to mention its plot suggests there will be plenty of conflict and angst. It airs on October 30. Muse has this on their list, so it looks like this will be English subbed.

Synopsis: Jett is a handsome man forced to become a hired gunman because of his dark past and problems. And one day, he is hired to kill a woman. It was suppose to be a simple job, however, it is complicated by the fact that his target, Sophita, is his ex-girlfriend’s sister. This leaves him with only two options. To either protect Sophita or to kill her. What will he chose? (Source: Collin Hypercuz and Wandering Queen at MyDramaList)

I like both Mik and Aum, so while I think Thailand action lakorns are often bad in the action department, I might just give this a look. Besides, the two great together, although the fact that she’s his ex-girlfriend’s sister is a bit weird. It airs 3 days a week, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

What’s Next? Mia Jum Pen (2020)

The Necessary Wife. The English title of upcoming lakorn remake Mia Jum Pen (2020)) tells you all you need to know about it really. This is going to be on Channel 3 and stars Mai Warit (Mia Archeep) and Pie Rinrada (Krong Karm). No word yet on when this will be released, but at least this lakorn is on Neko’s English subbing list so it should be English subbed.

Synopsis: Tawan live with Yuanjai, aunt in law and her daughter Yardfah as servant. Yhod, her uncle once made promise with his friend Trong to set their child marriage. Yhardfah refuse it, think that Tomorn, Trong’s son, is rustic and poor guy, also being in relationship with Bunlaeng. They don’t make any money, just spend Yuanjai’s money. One day, Tomorn gives his hand to pay a debt for Yuanjai, so she let Tawan to marry him as Yhardfah. Because of telling that he hate liar, Tawan start feeling awkward about this. At Tomorn’s house, she’s always bullied by Sawai, his mother, Gingkaew, nanny of his sister and Sopit, his friend who crush on him (Source:thaidramatic_update). (Source: MyDramaList)

This couple looks good together and I’m twisting myself up into knots hoping the nang’ek isn’t the doormat she was in the previous 2001 version and reports seem to back me up, so I’m hopeful.

Tuesday’s Teaser: The Blooms at Ruyi Pavilion

Chinese dramas have been an embarrassment of riches this year, putting out so many dramas that have gone on my plan to watch list that I couldn’t get through them all in two years much less one. And The Blooms at Ruyi Pavilion (2020) is just the latest to go on my list. Ju Jing Yi (In a Class of Her Own) is our heroine who has “foreseeing dreams” and sees herself married to Zhang Zhe Han (Everyone Wants To Meet You (2020)) in one of her dreams. The drama starts airing October 21, 2020 on iQiyi, and I’m pretty sure this will get subbed.

Synopsis: Fu Rong who’s the second daughter of the Fu family unexpectedly had the ability of “foreseeing dreams” after a serious illness. She predicted that she would marry to Prince Su, Xu Jin, and finally suffered the fate of being buried. However, Xu Jin also has the ability of foreseeing dreams. Although Xu Jin also predicted the same tragedy, he doesn’t want to avoid it but try his utmost to change the destiny. These two people begin the sweet game of “framing one another”. (Source: iQiyi) ~~ Adapted from the novel “Chong Hou Zhi Lu” by author Xiao Jia Ren.

I’ve watched the two leads together in 2018’s Legend of Yun Xi before and they make a great couple. The screenwriter for The Blooms at Ruyi Pavilion (2020) is Jin Yuan Yuan and she was also the screenwriter of Legend of Yun Xi, so we have a solid team on this drama… including one of the directors Lin Jian Long who also worked on, can u guess? 😁 Yes, that’s right, he was the director of Legend of Yun Xi (the other director is Chen Guo Hua). So this looks to be very much a reunion of the 2018 drama, and you know what, I’m all for it. It was a good drama, but well, not exactly a happy ending. Let’s hope our couple here get their happy ending!

What’s Next? Sunya Ruk Sunya Luang

I’ve just finished Stranger 2, and still feel in a bit of a drama funk, but hopefully this lakorn will change things around. Sunya Ruk Sunya Luang (2020) is a past/present lives drama and I’m all for it. Ngamnet Denkhun (Toong Sanaeha (2020)) pairs with Namwhan Phulita (Fak Fah Kiri Dao) in this Channel 3 lakorn that starts airing October 16, 2020. Muse has it on their subbing list, so it should be English subbed!

Synopsis: A story transitioning between the past and present lives.

(Source: mydramalist.com)

The teaser looks really interesting! The lakorn looks beautifully filmed, and I like the special effects too, I’m impressed. This lakorn will air 3 days a week, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. 🤞 Fingers crossed it lives up to the teaser.

Tuesday’s Teaser: Tale of the Nine Tailed Fox

I’m in the mood for a good romantic fantasy drama and Korean drama Tale of the Nine Tailed (2020) is looking like it might fulfill that slot. It stars Lee Dong Wook (Goblin ) and Kim Bum (That Winter, The Wind Blows) as gumihos and Jo Bo Ah (My Strange Hero (2018)) as a tv producer who’s interested in myths, like gumihos. This is a tvN drama which airs October 7, 2020 and it should be English subbed.

Synopsis: The story features the mythical nine-tailed fox, or gumiho, Lee Rang who has just settled in the city. Able to transform into human form, he goes about cleansing human spirits, all the while creating havoc. Enter the talented television producer Nam Ji Ah whose current show features urban myths. With nerves of steel, she will stop at nothing to secure unusual, if not dangerous, subject matter to showcase. She sets her sights on Lee Rang who appears just too good to be true; irresistibly handsome, intelligent, fit; in fact the ideal guest. But his heartlessness will render doubt in her that he is indeed of this world. Step-brother to Lee Rang is the captivating Lee Yeon, reputed to be the most dangerous of all gumihos living among humans. Despite being half-human himself, he harbors a deep-seated contempt for all people. For sport, he will unleash his seductive prowess upon his human-du-jour, by promising to grant them their wishes, only to trick them into paying a hefty price for their earthly desires. The director of Tale of the Nine Tailed (2020) is Kang Shin Hyo and he worked together with screenwriter Han Woo Ri on 2018’s Children of a Lesser God before so they’ve had experience working together. There aren’t a lot of dramas based on gumihos, less then 10, which is too bad because I’ve always felt they’re a very interesting legendary creature ever since watching My Girlfriend is a Gumiho (2010) (which is a great romantic comedy by the way, for those looking for more gumiho love.) Let’s hope this will be another winner!

What’s Next? Marry Me! (2020)

I’ve been wanting to watch more Japanese doramas as I usually watch at least 5 doramas a year, but this year I’ve only watched 3. So Marry Me! (2020) caught my eye. The dorama starts airing October 3, 2020 and features Kumada Rinka as the female lead and Seto Toshiki (Anata no Ban Desu). Hoping for a sweet romantic comedy and that it will be English subbed.

Synopsis: The story follows 28-year-old civil servant Akiyasu Shin as he’s chosen to take part in a new government program under the so-called “NEET protection law”. This project pairs government employees with NEETs, as a means to rehabilitate them and re-introduce them into society. Problem is, his chosen partner, Sawamoto Himari, was signed up without her knowledge! Will Akiyasu Shin end up winning her over? Or will this arranged marriage be a bust!? (Source: MangaDex) ~~ Based on webcomic “Marry Me!” by Miku Yuki.
