What’s Next? Let’s Fight Ghost (2021)

I might be mistaken, but I think this is the first Thai remake of a kdrama airing this year. Let’s Fight Ghost (2021) is a remake of 2016’s Bring It On, Ghost (2016). Our ghost busting team consists of Saint Suppapong and Orn Patchanan. This is going to be on Channel True4u production, which is well known for their many kdrama remakes, some good (Full House) and some bad (Princess Hours). This will start airing today March 3, 2021, two days a week, and it also will be a Netflix release (not sure what regions though), so hopefully it will be English subbed.

Synopsis: A cohabitation comedy about a ghost of a high school girl who has been dead for 5 years and an exorcist college boy with the ability to see and hear ghosts. What he’s discovered over the years is that he can touch them and fight them off, so when he’s in need of a part-time job and can’t find one that pays well enough, he starts putting ads online as an exorcist for hire. His ad: “Will face off with your ghosts. Chances of winning: virgin ghosts 80%, bachelor ghosts 40%, child ghosts 97%, the rest 50%.” One night he goes out on the job and faces off with a schoolgirl ghost, and during the fight, they accidentally kiss and sparks fly.” (Source: IMDb) (Source: MyDramaList)

Tuesday’s Teaser: Borderless (2021)

There’s a rather intriguing upcoming mystery Japanese dorama coming soon called Borderless (2021). I really love the mood and lighting in the teaser and the whole aesthetics of the dorama and even the cover poster. With 4 separate stories that are somehow connected to each other, this is very much a girl centered drama, look at this main cast list: Morita Hikaru, Hayakawa Seira, Watanabe Risa, Hamagishi Hiyori, Endo Sakura, and Saito Kyoko. The dorama starts airing March 7, 2021 on dTV, and hopefully someone will English sub it.

What’s Next? Himitsu no Ai-chan (2021)

I’m definitely in the mood for something light hearted and fun and this Japanese dorama about a tomboy dressing up as a cute cafe maid may just fit the bill. Himitsu no Ai-chan (2021) is based on a manga and stars Taira Yuna (I’m Underage But I’m Not a Child (2017) – cute film by the way) and Sato Kanta (Sweet Tai Chi). This romantic comedy already started airing on Fuji Tv on February 20, 2021 once a week, 10 episodes as usual. Hopefully, some fan will English sub this dorama.

Synopsis: Kasumi “Ai” Aiko is an athletic, tomboyish member of her school’s basketball club. She is very popular among the girls and can even outplay the boys’ team, with the exception of one person—Amano Reo. His skills on the court are only matched by one thing: his popularity. Envious, Ai proclaims him as her rival, and every day after practice, they compare the number of love letters they each received, which always results in her loss. In need of workers, Ai’s brother employs her at his maid cafe called “Spica.” Since she does not appear girlish enough, her appearance is changed with a wig and some makeup.

One day, Reo visits the cafe with other members of the boys’ team. Worried that they will see through her disguise, she tries to hide, inadvertently spilling drinks on Reo. As she is cleaning up after her mistake, suddenly, Reo asks to go on a date with her. After thinking about it, she eagerly comes up with a plan for revenge—she will make him fall in love with her and then dump him. This Tencent production airs February 26, 2021 three days and week and will be English subbed on Viki, as well as WeTv and possibly Tencent’s own yt channel also, so lots of places to find this drama.

What’s Next? Girl2K (2021)

I’ve talked about this lakorn before, but now it’s finally airing! Girl2K (2021) stars Aom Sushar (Full House) as a 2000 year old woman trying to end her curse by falling in love with 1 of her 4 suitors, who are played by Off Jumpol (Girl Next Room: Richy Rich)), Fiat Pattadon (The Gifted: Graduation)), Toy Pathompong (Girl Next Room: Motorbike Baby) and Utt Uttsada (Chun Cheu Bussaba). Girl2K (2021) is airing Febrary 17, 2021 on GMM on Wednesday and Thursday. GMM may be English subbing this, as they sub some of their series and it has an English subbed trailer, so fingers crossed!

If you can’t play the video, here is the link to the teaser here. And you can find a song from the ost here. The trailer is a mix of comedy and drama, with a hint of tragedy here and there that it’s hard to tell what exactly the end result will be, whether it will be more comic then dramatic or vice versa and blend them successfully, but irregardless, I’m glad we’re getting more unique storylines and plots from Thailand.

Synopsis: Momay is two thousand years old. For centuries she has never aged, never gotten sick, never died. Having tried hundreds of methods to kill herself over and over again and always failing, Momay finally sees a ray of light at the end of the tunnel when her friend Krateng, a fortuneteller, tells her that she will be able to age and pass on if she finds the love of her life within the year. The problem is, there are four candidates. Thawin—her hardworking and generous boss, Khun Prom—their company’s biggest client, Kampun—a sweet young man—and Moo Tod—the dashing new guy. Four candidates and one year to find the love of her life. But who’s the right one? (Source: Soju at MyDramalist)

Tuesday’s Teaser: Ku Kaen San Rak (2021)

Well, Ku Kaen San Rak (2021) looks to be a lot of fun. This remake of a 2011 lakorn that starred Aum and Chakrit has the English title of ‘My Beloved Enemy.’ The lakorn airs February 21, 2021 on Channel 7. Main couple this time is played by Mookda Narinrak and Micheal Pattaradet, who starred together in 2019’s Suparburoot Jorm Jon: Maturot Lohgan and most people loved them in that so it’s no wonder they look so natural together. No word yet on if this will be English subbed, but we do have lots of Mookda fans out there so hopefully someone comes through.

Nevertheless, she has a boyfriend named Nu, a dashing and mild-mannered teacher from the same town. Songkran and his father have been eyeing a piece of land that Ingdao’s father, Saeng, currently owns. It was given to him by his late wife so he cherishes it very much.

After Songkran obtains proper documents, he leaves her. Ingjun was devastated.

Furious, Ingdao wants to take revenge for her younger sister who tried to commit suicide along with getting their land back. But knowing that Songkran will never fall for her in her current state, she is helped by her best friend Moddaeng and transformed into a gorgeous woman named Daopradub.

What’s Next? Rebirth For You (2021)

Really loving the pics from yet another Chinese drama about a married couple, this time it’s Rebirth For You (2021). You might have seen female lead Ju Jing Yi in The Blooms at Ruyi Pavilion and male lead Joseph Zeng from The Journey Across the Night (2020). This is a new pairing for the couple, but both the director Zhi Lei and the screenwriter Ju Fang Fang have worked with Ju Jing Yi before. I already love the stills from this drama so looking forwards to it. This is a Tencent production that has no air date yet, but hopefully will be English subbed.

Synopsis: Story of how Jiang Baoning uses her capability to balance the different forces in the imperial court, and together with her husband Li Qian, helps the young Emperor stabilize the court and create a peaceful golden era. (Source: DramaWiki) *Adapted from novel of the same name by Zhi Zhi

(Source: mydramalist.com)

Directors are Cheng Yuan Hai (Ruyi’s Royal Love in the Palace), and
Hou Yong (A World Without Thieves). No word yet on the screenwriter, but I’m hoping Rebirth For You (2021) is another great palace drama akin to my favorite Story of Yanxi Palace (which was 70 episodes and mostly mesmerizing in spite of that fact).

What’s up in the blogsphere? Drama News and Recs

So I’m not really looking forwards to any drama coming out this week (thank goodness because there are already too many lakorns out there I want to watch), so instead I wanted to point out some posts I’ve seen that are interesting to us drama lovers.

I’m going to be busy this week and possibly next week finishing up projects and updates to my other blog so unfortunately won’t be getting to blog about the newly released lakorns until later on. Hopefully, this will give you a good idea on where to go to find more posts on lakorns and more reviews.

Drama News

My Husband in Law aired in both China and Thailand at the same time.
  • Because of the popularity of Asian content as demonstrated in this article, Netflix is pouring even more money and resources into making Asian content.
  • A lot of that will be South Korean of course, but lakorns in particular are gaining in popularity in Asia (see here and here – not in English), and this means more money will go into making them, a good thing if you ask me that should increase the production costs of lakorns, but hopefully also reward good writing, directing and so on.
  • Blobofcolour had a post about the rising popularity of lakorns in Singapore here.
  • Now sites like Viu.com and Dimsum.my have lakorns that are English subbed. It’s like we have viki back, but unfortunately only certain Asian countries can access the sites.

Drama Reviews, Recaps and Recommendations

  • Lovefia has been on a roll recently, taking a look at lakorns like Talay Luang, Mia Jum Pen, and Dao Kon La Duang, as well as doing recaps of a drama on my to watch list, Duangjai Nai Montra.
  • You can also catch Lovefia on twitter.
  • I love it when fansubbers do reviews of the lakorns they watched subbed, so check out Thippy‘s 2020 Lakorn Recap and Reviews. She did a rant on Rahut Rissaya 2020, which I sorta agree about, but I also liked it more than she did. And I still have to finish the last 3 episodes (I heard disappointing things about them so I’m not excited.😟)
  • Want to find more recommendations on 2020 dramas to watch, Chinese dramas in particular? I thought this post by mz4jun was really well made.
  • Lakorn Galaxy recently did a Best Lakorns of 2020 list here.

And that’s it for this post. Do you know of any bloggers I’ve missed? What are you favorite go to blogs?

2020 in Lakorns: News and 2021 Lakorns

Time to complete my look back at 2020, its trends, and give you a heads up on likely 2021 lakorns in the works. I love this part of my yearly reviews the most actually. Of course, there are a number of lakorns that I’m really looking forwards to and have highlighted here. But there are many more lakorns I just don’t have the time to talk about, so yeah, this will be by no means a complete listing of 2021 lakorns, just ones I’m particularly interested in.

This year, I’ve already done posts on 2020 comedy lakorns part 1, part 2, historical lakorns and action lakorns. Last year, I put all the 2019 English subbed lakorns in part 1 and if they were not subbed, but sounded interesting, or different and should be subbed, they were part 2. So you can check out these posts to see what you may have missed out on in 2019. So 2019 action lakorns part 1 here, part 2 here, 2019 comedy lakorns part 1 here, part 2 here, 2019 drama lakorns (slap n kiss included) part 1 here, part 2 here. 2019 historical lakorns here.

2020 Trends and News

2020 had two major trends that I noticed, lakorns with characters with special powers, and more and more remakes, not just Korean this time, but several from Taiwan, and so on. Characters could read minds, hear voices, see the future and so on, like in Payakorn Sorn Ruk, Leh Bunpakarn, Mue Prab Khao Saan Sek, Spark Jai Nai Jomying and so on. And I’ll talk more about remakes in my 2021 lakorn section down below.

Payakorn Sorn Ruk

In addition, we had lakorns being aired simultaneously in both China and Thailand and an increasing focus on lakorns in streaming platforms such as Viu and Dimsum.my. All of this bodes well for lakorns in the future. COVID 19 also played a role in lakorns as well, delaying some and causing others to air earlier than expected and I wrote about it here and here. I expect 2021 to have more of the same, but hopefully the vaccines will help slow the spread of COVID 19 enough to mitigate most of its effects.

2021 Lakorns

Lakorns with favorite actors/actresses

  • Prom Likit (2021), the sequel to popular historical lakorn Bpoop Phaeh Saniwaat is supposed to start filming in February 2021, but who knows if we’ll see this lakorn this year.
  • Mark Prin is in upcoming action lakorn Game Lah Torrachon (2021) along with Taew Nataphon and it is currently being filmed right now.
  • Miti Thi Sarm (2020) starring Taew as well and Nadech as an angel?
  • I like Weir, but do I want him to see him with his step grandma in Krong Nampueng (2021)? Eh, I don’t know about that. 😜 Although she does look really good for her age.

Many More Remakes

There were a lot of remakes last year, and not just Korean remakes either like WHO ARE YOU (2020), or Chun Cheu Bussaba. There were also Deja Vu from Taiwan, and even Mother from a Japanese dorama. 2021 promises more remakes of lakorns as well as other countries’ dramas.

Here are a few of the 2021 remakes I’m keeping an eye on.

Source: GMMTV’s yt channel
  • So finally Thailand is getting it’s version! It’s about time! F4 Thailand: Boys Over Flowers (2021) should be airing soon, they’ve been putting out lots of teasers.
  • You are My Heartbeat (2021) is apparently related to Chinese drama The Fox’s Summerwhich I never watched, but I love the pairing of Push Puttichai and Mai Davika.
  • And Push will also be in Boss & Me, the remake of Chinese megahit drama, Boss & Me (2014) and I’m just hoping Push’s co star, Aom Sushar will bring on the cute.
  • remake of a 2007 beloved Taiwanese drama, My Lucky Star (2021) is about a thief finding love and redemption.

Lakorn remakes of lakorns

  • Song Sanaeha should finally be coming out, right? I’m not a big fan of twin lakorns, but this one stars Kimberley Voltemas and James Ma, so I can get behind that pairing.
  • I really loved the original lakorn of this ghost/cop love story Prang Sanaeha (2021), which had some bittersweet moments.
  • Irresistable (2021) is a remake of 2015’s Roy Ruk Raeng Kaen (2015), so you can expect lots of revenge and melodrama galore.
  • Did u like/love So Wayree (2020)? If so, you may like its sequel, Buang Wimala, but the main couple switches to a friend of Parin, Gun and Wimala, a girl who’s supposed to steal evidence from Gun.
  • Another remake of model drama Sai Roong (2021), this time starring Sammy Cowell and Tono Pakin is heading to our tv screens… soon? Hopefully?
  • Sapai Jao Sua (2020) is a remake of of a marriage of convenience story that I so love, so I’m definitely checking this one out if someone English subs it. Pretty please fansubbers?
