2020 in Lakorns: Historicals

Welcome to lakornview’s 2020 in lakorns, where I go over what was English subbed of interest and also what lakorns should have been English subbed. I’ll have multiple posts on different genres and subjects, including about different trends in lakornland and what the future holds. This was a strange year, with COVID delaying the releases of many lakorns and a number of channels just played reruns, nevertheless, let’s begin with the historical genre.

2020 was kind of a bust for historical lakorns, although there were a fair number of time traveling lakorns, but straight historical lakorns were largely absent, unless you include the few historical/horror lakorns that went unsubbed this year. Maybe if we actually get a 2021 sequel to blockbuster historical 2018’s Bpoop Phaeh Saniwaat called Prom Likit (2021), historicals will see a revival in 2021, time will tell.

I discussed 2019 historical lakorns such as Thong Ake Mor Yah Tah Chaloang (2019), Krong Karm (2019) and more in this post here. I put all the English subbed lakorns in part 1 and if they were not subbed, but sounded interesting, or different and should be subbed, they were part 2. So you can check out these posts to see what you may have missed out on in 2019. So 2019 action lakorns part 1 here, part 2 here, 2019 comedy lakorns part 1 here, part 2 here, 2019 drama lakorns part 1 here, part 2 here.

Dung Duang Haruetai – The story of three kingdoms. Kasit ruled by King Rangsimun is the wealthiest and most powerful but they lack a sea route, for this reason King Rangsimun had planned to politically wed Princess Maneesala of Tanta in order to conveniently use their water route. However if both Kasit and Tanta were to unite that would cause Puntoolat to become isolated and for this reason the three kingdoms have longed lived with suspicion of one another.

Princess Maneesala decided to flee in order to escape the wedding because she had heard many ruthless stories about King Rangsimun but she accidentally fell into a trap and was rescued by Prince Tiyuttithorn/ P’Chai of Puntoolat where she asked to seek refuge.

Upon hearing the news of Princess Maneesala’s disappearance and learning that it may be linked to P’Chai, Princess Tatsiga feared the start of a war and so she made her way to speak to P’Chai and got kidnapped by King Rangsimun and brought to Kasit. Tatsiga believed she was kidnapped as a hostage in order for Kasit to negotiate Maneesala’s return and so she began at first to dislike Rangsimun. However Rangsimun had fell in love with Tatsiga at first sight and so began their love story. (Source: Sharerice)

Reason it’s interesting: This had to be one of the most anticipated historical lakorns of 2020, but most reviewers gave it an unfavorable review compared to the 1996 in terms of the romance and fantasy elements. Others enjoyed the 2nd couple’s story more and the costumes and cinematography of the lakorn. Still, it got a rating of 7.8 on mydramalist and it stars Tik Jesadaporn and Kimberley Voltemas, so if you’re a fan of either, this might be for you. This was subbed by Muse. Trailer

Reason it’s interesting. James Jirayu and Taew Natapohn both have their fans who will definitely want to watch this. It also looks like there are many different past lives that the lakorn looks at, which made it confusing for some viewers. I also think James having special powers is an unique slant to the past lives genre. It is English subbed by Muse Trailer above.

Ruk Laek Pop (2020) – A modern day reckless influencer gets transported back into the past where he meets his look-alike great grandfather. To somehow get back to the present, he needs his great grandfather’s help. Matters get chaotic when he gets involved in his great grandfather’s love life. If he alters who his great grandmother is he would cease to exist. What valuable lessons will he learn and how will he return to the present?.

Reason it’s interesting? Film Thanapat, Vill Wannarot and Bifern Anchasa Mongkhonsamai all star in this lakorn, with Film playing dual roles. The lakorn also has an interesting plot, one I’ve seen before in western films like Back to the Future, but is new to Thailand lakorns I believe. The 28 episodes this lakorn has did put some viewers off, but other people loved the chemistry between the couples as well as the acting by the leads. This lakorn is on Muse’s site. Trailer

Sunya Ruk Sunya Luang (2020) A story transitioning between the past and present lives.

Reason it’s interesting? Denkhun Ngamnet plays a cop who meets a mysterious woman, played by Namwhan Phulita he takes a dislike too. And there’s another woman too who always seems to be around. There are unusual deaths occurring and the cop has to figure out what’s happening and why. I’ve just started watching this and am already intrigued by the story, which is a love triangle. So far most of the story has been in the present times, so I’m wondering how much the past plays a part in this. This is was subbed by Muse. Trailer above

Kadee Rak Kham Pop (2020) – Puncha is an investigator and met Dunchaya who happens to be the suspect in poisoning a victim by being the one who made the food. Because of fear, she ran away and Puncha chased her. They were in a boat and strange things happen leading them to two crossed back to 1913. Puncha had to temporarily stop investigations into the case of Dunchaya, and they were looking for a way back together, but the two were accidentally involved in a murder case. Looking for a way to get back from the present time, the two investigated the case but the matter was not as simple as the leads thought, many killed in a row and they have to find who is doing it. Reason it’s interesting. Honestly I saw the 1st episode and wasn’t impressed. But this is only 10 episodes, and there are not a lot of other options for historical dramas this year, sooo. This is English subbed by Muse and Thippy Trailer

Toong Sanaeha (2020) – The story is set in the 1970s, in a small Thai village. Paitoon is in love with Yupin, whose father has gambling issues. They planned on getting married but Pao, his mother, doesn’t like Yupin and won’t accept their relationship because of her father. While Paitoon is in monkhood, Pao forces Yupin to marry Praiwan, Paitoon’s brother who’s suffering from polio since childhood. From now on, Yupin is Paitoon’s sister-in-law, but their love for each other has not gone away. Will they be able to overcome all obstacles and be together again? Reason it’s interesting? As one of the few actual historical lakorns of 2020 that doesn’t involve time travel/past lives, it would be neat if this were English subbed. Both the director (Padiwaradda) and screenwriter (Klin Kasalong (2019)) have a lot of experience and done many historical lakorns, so this lakorn was in capable hands. Plus it stars actors such as Sorat Jaron, Toey Jarinporn and Noi Busakorn.

Wimarn Montra (2020) “There’s a past at this house, there’s death at this house, waiting will be over at this house.” She try to beat her rival because of being betrayed by her lover, decide to spell his spirit to be with her. She use a blood from innocent girl to live as immortal. Waiting for new perfect body of her lover. (Source: thaidramatic_update)

Reason it’s interesting? Yui Chiranan and BigM Krittarit star in this lakorn that aired on Channel 7. This is another past/present lives lakorn which seems fairly interesting from its trailer.

Pbop Phee Jao (2020) A young woman born with the fortune of a ghost’s successor But then you have to lose everything, including your lover. She tries to resurrect her lover from the dead until the end. At the prison with malice and waiting for the day the lover will return again.

700 years later, at Wiang Pha Chan, there is a big miracle. Awakening from a long and warm sleep in Chiang Rai city, Wiang Pha Chan has two wives, Mae Chao Thong-On. Who are pregnant and mother, mother-in-law from foreigners who try to not be pregnant

Thongthong’s mother gave birth to an ugly baby, named Khamthong. In the middle of the night.

One night Ruang found Khamthong eating the victim, knowing that she was ghoul. Rueang would like to help her. Therefore will take her to see Luang Pho. Ring gave birth and died immediately. Doctor Phaseng, a medicine doctor who helped deliver babies to escape from Wiang. While the golden expensive words fled. (Source: thairath)

Reason it’s interesting? Uhhhh. This stars Smart Krissada and Natharika Thamapreedanan, among other actors, on Channel 8 and seems to be one of the few horror historicals of 2020. There was also a sequel that aired this year as well, which really surprised me because it’s not often this type of genre gets a sequel. Pbop Phee Jao 2 (2020) seems to have most of the same cast. Trailer.
