This week, I wanted to delve more into the supernatural/paranormal world of upcoming lakorns, and also Korean and Chinese dramas as well. But no ghost dramas here, since they’re so frequent in lakornland. Please note these are dramas that caught my eye as the most interesting, and it’s not a complete list by any accounting.
Lakorns
- Angel Beside Me (2020) just started airing Jan 18 and it’s being subbed on GMMTV’s yt channel. It stars Jane Ramida Jiranorraphat (The Gifted) and JJ Kritsanapoom (In Family we Trust) in a story about a girl who is helped by the angel besides her.
- Miti Thi Sarm (2020) has two big names attached to it, Nadech Kugimiya and Taew Natapohn, so it’s hard to tell when this will come out, but I mention it here because it has an angel in it too like Angel Beside Me. Synopsis: Chompoonute just graduated from abroad. She reached the turning point of her life when she met Naruenartbodin, a mysterious gentleman. She starts to practice meditation to find out where he’s from, and later she discovers that he’s an angel from the sky. (Source: MyDramaList
- Prai Sungkeet (2020) With Bank Artit (Panthakan Rak) and Pimprapa Tangprabhaporn (Look Mai Laai Sonthaya) Synopsis: “Plaai Krung” is a cursed song that everyone who sings this song, will die from bleeding. Maeyakorn, the fuddle player, need to help Yot, the heir of this song composer, to find out the truth when her friend and teacher die after singing this song. They find out that composer of this song is teacher Terd, not Pook. Terd’s spirit is still here with that song and will kill everyone who sing it. - Girl2K (2020) stars Aom Sushar (Full House) as a 2000 year old nang’ek who must find the love of her life in a year to age normally and die, but the trouble is she has 4 candidates to choose from!
- Maya Sanaeha (2020) Ice Preechaya (Rak Kan Panlawan) and Ken Phupoom (Raeng Ngao 2) This might be considered a ghost tale, but I thought the second chance angle was a little unique. Synopsis: Chakree broke up with Monsicha, his long-term girlfriend because he slept with Sawarot, his servant, while he was drunk but he doesn’t have feelings for her. After that, he got into a car accident due to drunk driving and became a roaming spirit. He can see everyone around him, but no one can see him. When Chakree finds out about someone’s secret, he attempts to stop something bad from happening. He also tries to keep Monsicha from moving on to another guy. How is he going to do that since he’s now a spirit who might not reborn again?
Korean Dramas
- The King: The Eternal Monarch (2020) airs July 31, 2020 and stars Lee Min Ho and Kim Go Eun. With popular screenwriter Kim Eun Sook (Goblin, The Heirs), this romantic drama about parallel worlds has a great chance at being a success. Synopsis: The drama is a fantasy romance drama about two parallel universes. One universe resembles modern-day Korea as we know it, while the other is an alternate universe in which Korea is an empire ruled by a single monarch. In order to fight evil and close the door between their two worlds, the ruler of the Korean Empire ends up joining forces with a detective who resides in modern-day Korea.
- The Game: Towards Zero (2020) aired Jan 22, 2020 Ok Taec Yeon and Lee Yun Hee star in this tale of a prophet who can see the time before people’s deaths and thus teams up with a detective to solve mysterious murders.
- A Good Day To Be a Dog (2020) This doesn’t even have many details out yet, just that it’s based on a webtoon and may not even come out this year, but I just had to include it based on the synopsis.😂 Synopsis: “A woman, named Hana, with a family curse of turning into a dog every midnight after her first kiss with a man. The only way to break the curse is to get a second kiss from the same person as a dog. After years of being careful and avoiding kissing anyone, Hana accidentally kisses the rude teacher, Mr. Jin, who happens to hate dogs. - The Story of Gumiho (2020) has Lee Dong Wook (Goblin) as the male gumiho and Jo Bo Ah as a tv producer who looks out for strange stories. Synopsis: “The story would follow the gumiho, who once ruled as a living god of the Baekdudaegan Mountain Range but now works as a sort of public official between this world and the underworld. His main job is to clean up the mess left behind by those who disturb the world of the living while hiding behind the guise of ghost tales. (Source: Soompi)”
- Welcome Home (2020) Airing March 25 and starring L as Hong Jo and Shin Ye Seon sounds like it might be a cute, if weird romantic comedy.🤔 Synopsis: “Hong Jo is a cat who has mastered the art of transformation into human form. He wants to become human for his owner, and in order to stay by her side, he starts living a double life. Kim Sol Ah is a woman in her 20s. She loves people and tries to protect the ones she loves. Hence, she attracts many cat-like people. Her father is like a Persian cat, her crush is like a Siamese cat, and others only make her worry and fuss. In the end, she brings Hong Jo home thinking he’s a cat but ends up in a completely different situation.”
Chinese Dramas
- The Love of Hypnosis (2020) Starring Crystal Liu and Jing Bo Ran (Love Through a Millennium). Synopsis: It is near the end of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of a new era. Ye Shen is a young man who loves his country. He crosses paths with Lu Man Sheng, the owner of a fragrance store, due to a misunderstanding. Lu Man Sheng has an unusual calling as she is able to help men and women who are troubled by problems involving the heart. Regardless of how their love story ends, she ushers them to reach a place of peace and without regret. Just as Lu Man Sheng helps those around her, she finds that she also faces the same pitfalls when it comes to her own romance with Ye Shen. (Source: ChineseDrama.info)
- Twelve Legends (2020) – stars Jaspar Liu of Before We Get Married acclaim and Gu Li Na Zha (Fighter of the Destiny) Synopsis: Jin Xing Jian is originally an ordinary rock who displays characteristics of a deity as well as a demon. He has his own studio in the human world, and is introduced to several quirky demons along the way – there’s the love story between a fish sprite and a noble and a jujube demon who wants to become an immortal. However, it’ll take the hero more than just learning through observation to chase back the love of his life – Ye Ming, the human form of a luminous night pearl. - Rose in the Starsea (2020) has two relative newbies, He Lan Dou and Niu Zi Fan, but the synopsis is different and the artwork on the poster interesting enough to merit a mention. Synopsis: Post 90 Go genius Wei Shengyu accidentally befriends Lian Tianqu, a guy from Starsea Rose planet. Lian Tianqu carries the burden of reviving his planet, which is slowly destroyed by natural disaster. When he met Wei Shengyu, his life changes, and he slowly understands humans’ love and sacrifice despite his cold nature. Wei Shengyu, who lacks fatherly love since young, has her heart closed up. However with Lian Tianqu’s company, she slowly becomes more confident. The two work together to combat the evil forces and save the Earth. Under Lian Tianqu’s help, Wei Shengyu’s ability and knowledge also drastically improves and she uses the skill of Go to help solve the crisis of Starsea Rose planet.
